Wise Men Find Jesus
Matthew 2:1-12

Wise Men – Legend or a story of a living faith to be shared?
Who were the Wisemen
Before there is faith there is an invitation from God
Faith begins when we respond to what God reveals
Faith will be tested
Trouble in Jerusalem-Herod
God supplies what we need to answer his invitation
Joy comes from by faith
Sharing the story

Intergenerational Question:
What was the first thing you knew about God?

Branching Out:

  1.  Read Matthew 2:1-12. What do you actually know about the wise men from what is in the passage?  Is it different from what you expected?
  2. What do the Wisemen know about Jesus?  What would God need to show you to convince you to make a long journey and give expensive presents to a stranger?
  3. Why do you suppose all Jerusalem is afraid when they hear the Wisemen asking about the king who has been born?  If you had been looking for a savior-king from God to arrive to kick out the Romans, how would you have felt about responding to the Messiah while he was still a child?

Digging Deeper:

  1. How do you think Mary felt when the wise men shared their story and their gifts?  What about Joseph when he heard it?
  2. What do you think the wise men told their children about this trip they took?
  3. What do you learn about God from the wise men’s story?  What do you learn about the Messiah?

December Memory Verse Luke 2:10-12 10 But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid; for see—I am bringing you good news of great joy for all the people: 11 to you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is the Messiah, the Lord. 12 This will be a sign for you: you will find a child wrapped in bands of cloth and lying in a manger.” Luke 2:10-12

I am privileged to be the Pastor of FPC, the husband of Laurie, and the father of Zoe. I feel so blessed to be in a job that I love in a community that brings me joy and life every day. I will not be blogging per se as every text that we come across on Sunday will be a repeat- but every week on Sunday I will post my branching out- a series of questions around the text for Sunday Worship. As well I will post the month’s memory verse and the week’s reading schedule.
